Understanding God – July 3 2019

It is impossible for the human mind to remain a human mind and at the same time to understand God. Only God’s mind can understand God. Only when the human mind is so relieved of its humanness that it becomes God’s mind, even to you, can that mind begin to understand God’s mind.

Pandit Usharbudh Arya, Ph.D.,

It’s always a question when speaking about meditation and spirituality as to whether or not to mention the idea of, God. The word itself is so fraught with meaning, so different to so many. Everyone’s idea is valid from their point of view; but even within given religions, one person’s opinion can be offensive to another, let alone across the broad spectrum of religions and differing cultures. It often makes more sense to use words like “nature” or “Totality,” “the All,” or even “the Divine,” in order to allow room for any and all. Each of these words means the same thing: that which encompasses everything. The Omnipresent. Everywhere and every time and everything.

People will hear what they hear. The ego will dismiss what it can dismiss. It seems a shame, though, that the idea of God–this thing that means unity–can be so divisive that most of us almost never use the word. When it is used, it’s nearly always a conversation about religion.

Religion is based in dogma, which is about belief rather than in experience. Belief resides in the mind and the mind is about separation, and unity itself is then merely an idea, rather than an experience to be sought.

It’s clear that the very idea of Omnipresence implies that any idea I may have of God must by definition be merely one aspect of the Whole that God is. With my finite human mind I cannot comprehend even the concept of infinity, let alone the idea of an Infinite Being.

Yet there is a desire to know God. To experience God.  And as it turns out this is all that is necessary. There is no need to find. Merely to seek.

We are all born with a connection to the great stream of life, though many of us have it taught or beaten out of us, or twisted into an idea that is not useable by us. If this is our truth, then at some point it’s time to start fresh.

What a great accomplishment this would be: to be willing to let go of every idea we have of God and become willing to seek an actual experience of God, rather than simply a new idea.

Meditation can be the first step. A step within, to find that place that is other than our thinking mind. The place where we may feel ourselves connected to this something greater. And then to look out into the world, seeking evidence of connection in the world.

It is possible to think ourselves away from God. The human mind is all about division and separation. It is not, however, possible to take a step that is away from God. Every step is in God’s direction. Through everything we see, God is looking back to us. It is left for us to begin to recognize this.

Today I will ask to see through God’s eyes, so that I may be able to see God. I will ask to hear through God’s ears, so that I may be able to hear God. I will ask to love through God’s embrace, so that I may be able to feel God. I will ask to step into the world with God’s direction, so that everything I do may be done in service to God. I will ask to know with God’s mind, so that I may be able to begin to understand God in a way that works for me.
