Follow Your Bliss – March 7 2019

If you do follow your bliss you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Follow your bliss and don’t be afraid, and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be.
Joseph Campbell

Society, schools, churches, our parents–in so many ways and from so many directions we are taught not to trust ourselves. We are taught not to trust what is within. We look to some authority, or to our peers, to show us how to be, when all along right here within we are shown, step by step, where to go and what to do. We have the most perfect guidance system there could be if only we stop long enough to experience it.

What does your heart say, we may ask. What feels right? Not what do I think. Not what is my opinion. Not what makes sense. How would the most perfect world feel, and am I moving toward that perfect world? Am I happy? Am I content? Does my life feel ‘on track’? Or am I choosing unhappiness now because I think it will lead to happiness in some far-off future?

Inside each of us there is a longing for something more than what can be seen and heard. There is the desire for wholeness, for unity. If the universe makes sense, if there is something here beyond random-icity and chaos and chance, if there is an intelligence to this life, why on earth would that intelligence give us these longings other than to lead us in the direction it would have us move? Call it nature or God or flow, how could this intelligence possibly be served by giving us unfulfillable desires, dooming us to lives of quiet desperation?

Nature shows itself the direction of life by making individual expressions of nature–each of us–want to move in that direction. Witness the blossoms of the sunflower following the light of the sun across the sky. Or soon-to-be-lovers seeing each other and connecting across a crowded room. Geese in formation flying north with the spring. Dolphins protecting surfers from sharks. This is life asserting itself in ways that are undeniable; and if we look at our own life we can see there are times when we simply know what to do, where to go, for no logical reason; and by following these hunches or intuitions, we find ourselves in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

Our mind can discount these occurrences as coincidence. And of course we have the option of listening to that voice. But why would we? Play a bit. See the universe as here for your learning and for your bliss. Not to serve the ego or fulfill the picture our mind has been trying to fulfill. But perfectly designed to evolve each of us as an expression of nature, offering us from within all the information we need in order to take the next right step.

This is the way the universe communicates with itself. It makes itself feel right when it is right.

Today I will follow an inspirational feeling, even at the risk of doing something silly. I will allow a sense of play into my day for at least a moment.
