There is a state of mind of absolute calmness, where the mind remains absolutely still, quiet and calm like the full moon. It spreads its light everywhere, the cool light of the moon. That is the state which is potentially in all of us even though it may not be active. To contact that and to pay respects to that inner being is the most important part of Guru Purnima.

Guru Purnima is the annual celebration of the lineage of the Vedic gurus, and especially Veda Vyasa, the compiler of the Vedas and the author of the Mahabharata.

The word ‘guru‘ means ‘the teacher who removes the shadow of ignorance.’ ‘Purnima‘ means ‘full moon.’

The holiday this years falls on July 4th.

Traditionally in our Vedic tradition, we celebrate this full moon night with stories, Indian sweets and chai tea, a moonlit stroll and a group performance of the puja ceremony that we do in gratitude to these teachers who have given so much to us.

Due to the constraints of the time, we will be offering the opportunity to share the ceremony with us via Zoom. We will have a brief description of what we are celebrating, puja done by Jeff and Diana Charkalis and a few of their teachers-in-training and then meditate together. After meditation, we all may have a walk in the moonlight from wherever we find ourselves.

There is also a tradition of requesting a boon on this night. A boon is a gift, freely given, by consciousness itself. Some people will write down their boon request and perhaps burn it at the end of puja. Some may prefer a silent mental offering.

When determining our boon request, we do well to ask, ‘what is it I desire that will help me to be more fully of service in this world? For we are celebrating the removers of darkness, and perhaps asking that we ourselves may be a part of that movement.
