01 May Only in Our Doing Can We Grasp You – May 2 2019
Only in our doing can we grasp you.
Only with our hands can we illumine you.
The mind is but a visitor:
it thinks us out of the world.
Each mind fabricates itself.
We sense its limits, or we have made them.
And just when we would flee them, you come
and make of yourself an offering.
I don’t want to think a place for you.
Speak to me from everywhere.
Your Gospel can be comprehended
without looking for its source.
When I go toward you
It is with my whole life.
Rilke’s Book of Hours: Love Poems to God, I, 51,
translated by Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy
One thing all great poets know: God is a process, not a thing. Life is a flow, not a product to be perfected. All good things come through this flow, are an expression of this flow; and if I listen carefully enough to the whisper of it, sometimes it will speak to me in ways I can express through the flow of myself, the process of God in me and through me. The me that is other than my thinking.
Today I will engage in the flow of life, rather than in my thoughts about life. I will notice when I have checked out of the here and now, and I will take the moments to check back in – to become present.
