16 Apr Thousands of Candles – April 17 2019
Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.
Siddhārtha Gautama Buddha
What am I going to share with the world today? What will I share with the people in my world?
What conditions have I placed on the world that must be met before I will allow myself the experience of happiness? Do I need to lose more weight, make more money, find a new lover, before I’ll be happy?
Is my world improved by my worrying? Is your world improved by my presence in it?
When I enter a room today am I bringing with me a cloud of anxiety or a breath of fresh air?
If today’s mood is the source of tomorrow’s experience, how will I feel when my eyes open tomorrow morning?
These are just some of the questions we might ask ourselves on any given day. It is not enough simply to meditate morning and evening. Consciousness is primary. All else flows from consciousness. We build our experience of the world first in our mind, then we live it out in our world. Again and again. If we want a different world, we must build a different mind. If we want a different mind, we must pay attention to our thinking in a way that allows us to observe it, rather than to be identified with it. We must ask ourselves, what kind of a world would I like this to be? What kind of a me would I like to be? Then we look at our thinking to see if it is in the direction we would like to move.
Happiness is always a good place to start.
Today I will insist on enjoying life.
